Walking to school, art in Gentilino
Friday’s walk to school, a weekend of art and useful updates from Collina d’Oro.
Good Thursday morning from Collina d’Oro. Tomorrow, the walk to school takes centre stage at a cantonal event; in the evening, an exhibition opens in Gentilino’s former bakery. There are practical matters to fit around them: a new chat service for municipal information, a forecast worth checking before heading out, and a few dates to put in the diary without confusing them with events that have already passed.
This letter covers 17–23 September, with a few clearly marked dates further ahead. It follows everyday life across Montagnola, Gentilino, Agra and Carabietta: school, public services and places to meet. A story need not be a major headline to deserve a place here. What matters is that the dates, addresses and arrangements are clear.
The municipality on WhatsApp: chat now, notifications later
The municipality has introduced Collina@WhatsApp, a free service for finding local government information by messaging 079 653 36 46. An AI assistant searches the official municipal websites for answers about opening hours, facilities, procedures and regulations. Although it uses the same app as conversations with family and friends, this is not a live chat with a member of the municipal staff.
There is an important distinction. The service page says notifications will start on 1 October 2026. Receiving them requires consent, but you can use the information chat without signing up for notifications. If no updates arrive over the next few days, that does not in itself mean something is wrong with your phone. How Collina@WhatsApp works.
Personal administrative matters still belong with the relevant office. The municipality says the assistant cannot access individual case files and does not replace its staff: an answer about how to apply is not an application. Our suggestion is to use the chat to find the right office or document, then follow the official instructions, particularly where a deadline is involved. Friday: a closer look at the journey to school
Tomorrow, Friday 18 September, Collina d’Oro hosts Ticino’s main event for International Walk to School Day. The municipal announcement involves children at the local public schools and encourages families to walk wherever possible. The point is not simply to reach the school gate: this year’s theme draws attention to nature along the way and to routes that are safe for children. School announcement.
The local calendar lists the morning from 07.30 to 10.30, with guests including Marina Carobbio Guscetti and Mattia Bottani. Breakfast and a circus performance are planned on arrival, followed by activities about food and mobility. The calendar places the journey in Montagnola, with Piazza Brocchi as its location reference. The listed hours should not be read as one meeting time for every class: families should follow the school’s own instructions for departure points and accompanying adults. Municipal programme.
Drivers may want to allow a little extra time and look out for groups walking to school, rather than treating nearby parking areas as improvised drop-off points. Families should also check the weather before setting out: Friday has the week’s greatest uncertainty. Any changes to the arrangements in case of rain need to come from the organisers, not from an assumption based on the forecast.
A weekend at Gentilino’s former bakery
The address to note is Via Berenice 2, in Gentilino’s old village centre: the former Artebianca bakery, now the Art|èlier space. On Friday 18 September at 18.00, Giulia Santambrogio’s San Francesco al femminile opens there as part of Hesse Artist in Residence. On Saturday 19 September at 16.30, the same venue hosts Storie di artiste contemporanee – Tra successi, sfide e cadute, a discussion with Mara Travella, Marta Margnetti and Muzi Soldati. Held in Italian, it brings contemporary artistic experience into conversation with readings from Hesse. The organiser also lists a voluntary contribution for this event. Discussion details.
The two events are close together, but the distinction is worth making: the exhibition opening is on Friday evening; the discussion is on Saturday afternoon. Regular visitors to the museum in Montagnola should check the address, as neither of these takes place at Torre Camuzzi. You can choose the opening, join the discussion or simply visit during the weekend’s exhibition hours, without having to plan a whole day around it.
Sunday 20 September at 16.00 takes us back to the Hermann Hesse Museum at Ra Cürta 2 in Montagnola. Simon Cattaneo and Torsten Korte will read Il poeta, from Leggende e Fiabe, in Italian and German. Listed admission is CHF 10, or CHF 8 for students and pensioners. Weather: watch Friday, then a brighter outlook
This is the official forecast for 6926 Montagnola, 473 metres above sea level, consulted on Wednesday 16 September at 16.24 CEST. It is not a Lugano forecast. The range gives the official product’s 10th–90th percentiles. It expresses uncertainty, not a guaranteed amount. Friday’s range is wide; zeros later in the week are not a promise of dry weather. Cyclomania runs until the end of the month
Collina d’Oro’s challenge continues until 30 September. Participants select the local challenge in the Cyclomania app and record their journeys. Published milestone rewards include a coffee in Gentilino at 15 points and a discount voucher for bicycle services in Grancia at 30 points; check the app for the conditions and how to redeem them. Trying it need not mean a long ride. An ordinary journey that suits your ability and the route’s condition is a reasonable place to start. After showers, reassess any unsurfaced stretches; collecting points is no reason to push ahead with an unsuitable ride. The more settled weekend in the current forecast offers a possibility, rather than a certainty to rely on several days ahead.
Three useful reminders—and their dates
The ATTE centre reopens on 5 October, not this week. The municipality has announced a return to regular opening hours. From Monday 5 October, the centre will open on Mondays and Thursdays from 14.00 to 17.30, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 09.00 to 11.30. The offer is straightforward: coffee, a newspaper and company, with everyone welcome. This is worth passing on to someone who rarely checks local websites. TASIS: an existing service for residents. Its Collina d’Oro resident portal lists access to the M. Crist Fleming Library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.00 to 12.00. Books may be consulted on site but not borrowed. This is not a new September event; it is a practical reminder for anyone looking for a place to read.
