The week on the Collina: walking to school and a Gentilino conversation

Good morning from the Collina.

The week opens without a new municipal notice that changes everyday traffic or local services. That is worth noting after the early-September works in Viglio and Via dei Camuzzi. On Friday morning, however, the pace changes. Collina d’Oro hosts the cantonal “Walking to School” day. For a few hours, the route towards Piazza Brocchi will be more than the usual school run: it will be the setting for pupils, families, teachers and guests.

At the weekend the focus moves to Gentilino. At Art|èlier in the former bakery, in the Cà di sopra quarter, Giulia Santambrogio opens work developed through the Hesse Artist in Residence programme. On Saturday, the same space hosts a conversation about the far-from-straightforward stories of two contemporary women artists. On Sunday, the bilingual reading returns to the Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola. It is not a week of big stages; it is a week that strings together routes, words and places to pause.

Weather: two days already in view, then the decisive check

This table uses only the MeteoSwiss local-forecast dataset for 6926 Montagnola, 473 metres above sea level, consulted on Thursday 10 September at 9.35 am. The 7 am UTC run currently covers Thursday 17 and Friday 18. MeteoSwiss publishes nine complete days, so figures for 19–23 September do not yet exist in the official source. We will not guess them. The table needs completing on Wednesday 16 September before sending.

Friday’s rainfall range is already wide enough to deserve attention. It does not say rain is certain, but neither does it justify assuming a dry day. For the school route and any outdoor opening, check the radar and the organiser’s page the evening before. At the time of consultation, no MeteoSwiss warning specific to Montagnola had been identified. That too needs checking again on 16 and 17 September.

Friday: the Collina hosts Walking to School

On Friday 18 September, from 7.30 to 10.30 am, the home-to-school route around Piazza Brocchi will host the cantonal edition of International Walking to School Day. The municipality, AGISCO and the municipal school describe a morning bringing together movement, health and sustainable mobility: children walk with their classmates and accompanying adults, then arrive at school for breakfast and a circus performance.

The announced guests include State Councillor Marina Carobbio Guscetti, deputy cantonal doctor Federico Peter, FC Collina d’Oro’s Mattia Bottani, Tiziano Bonoli from the Department of Territory and sports journalist Mauro Antonini. This is not a traffic procession to watch from a distance; it is a school morning. For anyone driving past or making a delivery near Piazza Brocchi, the practical advice is simple: leave a few minutes early, slow down and follow the directions of the accompanying adults.

To check on Thursday evening: at the 10 September check, the municipality had not published a separate traffic plan or diversion. If one appears on the noticeboard or through school channels, this paragraph needs updating with the exact streets and times.

From Montagnola to Gentilino: Hesse continues to open a conversation

At 6 pm on Friday, Art|èlier in the former bakery on Via Berenice hosts the opening of San Francesco al femminile, a pop-up exhibition by Giulia Santambrogio. Admission is free. The exhibition is open on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20, then again on 26 and 27 September, from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. It grew from the Hermann Hesse Museum’s Hesse Artist in Residence programme. This is not historical reconstruction, but contemporary work joining literature, the body, spirituality and nature.

At 4.30 pm on Saturday 19, also at Art|èlier, Stories of contemporary women artists – successes, challenges and setbacks starts from Hesse’s relationship with several young women artists during his Montagnola years and brings it into the present. Readings, discussion, an aperitif with organic products and the presentation of Santambrogio’s work are announced; admission is free. For a quieter Sunday, the Hermann Hesse Museum welcomes Simon Cattaneo and Torsten Korte at 4 pm for The Poet, from Legends and Fairy Tales, in Italian and German.

The practical page: keep an eye on water and mobility

The municipal picture on water had not changed in the publications checked up to 10 September. The level-one drought status announced in August for Carabietta and for Gentilino and Montagnola — excluding Pian Scairolo — must therefore be confirmed, rather than assumed to have been automatically renewed. Agra did not appear in those two notices. The municipality also distinguishes between private and public users. Before arranging washing, filling or outdoor work, use the current drought-status sheet rather than word of mouth.

For mobility, the latest municipal notices concerned works that ended on 9 September: the crane in Via dei Camuzzi and paving at the Via in Pasquée–Via Cantonetto junction. At today’s check, no new local notice emerged for Pian Scairolo, the Gentilino tunnel or access to Carabietta and Agra. It is a modest but useful point: there is no new confirmed closure to put in the calendar. For a last-minute change, the online municipal noticeboard remains the reference.

A weekend reminder

Cyclomania continues until 30 September. It is a straightforward invitation to replace at least one short trip with a bicycle or a walk, then record it in the national initiative. It does not change the rules of the road and it does not replace care on the Collina’s busier routes. In a week centred on the home-to-school journey, it is a coherent thread even for people without children at school.

For the rest, the practical handover is this: expect extra movement near Piazza Brocchi on Friday morning; on Friday evening and Saturday, upper Gentilino offers two free events; on Sunday, Montagnola returns to Hesse’s words.
