Water wisely, music in Sant’Abbondio
13–19 August: heat warnings, events in Gentilino and Montagnola, and municipal notices.
Good Thursday from the Collina.
In Montagnola, the Ovale kiosk opens again later this afternoon. In Gentilino, Friday brings a young chamber ensemble to Sant’Abbondio; a few hours later, the school welcomes a full orchestra. It is a week in which one practical point matters above all: the heat is not something to take lightly.
The municipality has asked residents to reduce non-essential water use. This is not a new compulsory ban. It is a clear call for restraint, prompted by pressure on supply during an exceptionally dry season. MeteoSwiss keeps a level-four heat warning in place for the Lugano region below 600 metres until Friday evening. The warning drops to level three for the weekend, but nights remain warm and any relief comes with more uncertainty around showers.
Seven days: hot until Friday, then cloudier
This is the official MeteoSwiss forecast for 6926 Montagnola, 473 metres above sea level, consulted on Wednesday 12 August at 4.01 pm. These are Montagnola figures; Agra, Gentilino and Carabietta can still see local differences because of altitude and exposure.

Until 8 pm on Friday, the warning is level four. MeteoSwiss expects regional highs of 32–36°C, humidity between 30 and 50 per cent, and night-time lows of 19–23°C. From Friday evening until Sunday at 8 pm, the hazard remains marked at level three.
For anyone out with children, older people or animals, the advice is straightforward: bring water, seek shade and keep strenuous activity away from the hottest part of the day. The later rainfall figures are not a promise of rain; the wide ranges mean the forecast needs a last check closer to the time.
Water: cut back now to avoid restrictions later
The municipality’s 3 August appeal applies across Collina d’Oro, from Montagnola and Gentilino to Agra and Carabietta. The Associazione Acquedotti Ticinesi and the municipality ask residents to reduce non-essential use: keep lawn and garden watering to a minimum, avoid washing cars, forecourts and outdoor surfaces, and postpone anything that is not necessary.
The most concrete figure concerns the period between 4 am and 8 am. According to the municipal notice, consumption can reach up to 300 per cent above levels seen when most irrigation systems are switched off. That peak is what puts the network under pressure. Drinking water must remain available first for drinking, food preparation and personal hygiene.
No new mandatory ban has been announced. The official wording describes a preventive measure: reduce use now and across the community in order to protect supply and avoid stricter restrictions. If the heat continues, check the municipality’s site and the online noticeboard before planning significant irrigation.
Separately, the municipality warns that current conditions may favour cyanobacteria in the municipality’s lakeside areas. Anyone using the shore at Carabietta should follow the signs on site and the cantonal guidance linked by the municipality.
Friday 14: two concerts, two places on the Collina
At 11.30 am, Sant’Abbondio Church in Gentilino hosts Francesco 800 with the AYSO Young Soloists: Ludovica Aurelia Fanelli on solo violin, Sara Diomede and Francesco Paolo d’Alessandro on violin, Emanuele Sasso on viola and Isabella Veggiotti on cello.
The organiser connects the programme to the Canticle and to the link between Hesse and Francis of Assisi. For local residents, it is also a welcome mid-morning event in a cool, intimate setting before temperatures rise again.
At 8.30 pm, Ceresio Estate brings Prima di Berlino to the Collina d’Oro school. Founded in Bari by Teresa Satalino, the AYSO Orchestra brings together 72 young musicians from across Italy. The concert comes before its appearance at Berlin’s Young Euro Classic.
These are two separate events, not a repeated programme. It is possible to attend both, but allow for the heat and check Ceresio Estate’s own channel for any last-minute practical information.
Sunday: Hesse returns to the Montagnola museum
At 4 pm, the Hermann Hesse Museum presents The Poetry of Travel: with Hesse through Northern Italy, with passages from From Italy. Lucilla Janssen reads in Italian and Marianne Niculescu in German.
The summer series does not require specialist knowledge of Hesse. It offers an hour of listening, in two languages, in a house and landscape deeply connected with his life.
Showers are possible on Sunday and the rainfall range remains broad. The museum is indoors, but anyone walking there or parking nearby should still check the updated forecast and the museum’s own notices before setting out.
At the Ovale and on the municipal radar
On Thursday and Friday from 5 pm, the Ovale in Piazza Brocchi remains open with the kiosk; Thursday also brings the small market with local products. E…state all’Ovale runs until 30 August. It is an easy place to meet without the formality of a major event, and with afternoon temperatures still above 30°C, early evening will be the more comfortable time to stop by.
On the civic side, the online noticeboard checked on 12 August shows no new publication after 3 August. The latest mobility notice remains the procedure for a 30 km/h zone on the cantonal road through Via Collina d’Oro in the Montagnola village centre. Municipal messages still before the Council include the new municipal regulation, rules for sports facilities and the CHF 1,050,000 design credit for the renovation of Montagnola primary school. These are ongoing files, not new decisions this week.
No new service notice emerged in the primary sources checked for Agra, Carabietta or Pian Scairolo in the coming seven days. The same is true for TASIS: its next published event is the 70th-anniversary weekend, 21–23 August, just beyond this edition’s time frame.
With heat continuing and showers possible from Sunday, this is a week when the latest detail matters more than a printed programme. For outdoor events, the organiser’s channel comes first; for water, traffic and official notices, the municipality is the reference.
