September opens with roadworks, gardens and Agra’s festival

Good Thursday from the Collina.

September arrives at two speeds. The weekend invites people out—first to Villa Gilardi, then to Bigogno—while the start of next week will require a little care behind the wheel. The closest road notice concerns the junction between Via in Pasquée and Via Cantonetto; a closure of Via dei Camuzzi in Montagnola has also been announced. Neither is a long project, but both fall within the same few days.

There is plenty between one road notice and the next. On Saturday, the Hermann Hesse Museum stays open late for Giardini musicali and its Notte bianca; on Sunday, the Picon society brings its annual gathering back to Agra, with a walk and free macaroni. Water restrictions also remain in place: drought level 1 still applies in Gentilino, Montagnola—excluding Pian Scairolo—and Carabietta. The municipality has not announced a new level for Agra.

Weather: warm and settled at first, rain increasingly uncertain

The table uses MeteoSwiss’s official local forecast for 6926 Montagnola, 473 m above sea level, checked on Wednesday 2 September at 16:10. The minimum and maximum temperatures are from the 16:00 run. For rainfall, we give the central estimate and, where useful, the range between the 10th and 90th percentiles. This is Montagnola rather than Lugano: Agra, Gentilino and Carabietta can differ with altitude and exposure.

For the moment, Saturday and Sunday look favourable for outdoor events: summer temperatures and a central rainfall estimate of zero. From Monday, uncertainty grows. Zero is not a guarantee; the range widens markedly on Tuesday and Wednesday. Since the Festa d’Agra only goes ahead in good weather, check the Picon channel on the morning itself. At the time of checking, there were no MeteoSwiss alerts specifically for the Montagnola area; Alertswiss, however, showed its message server as temporarily unavailable.

From Monday: work on Via in Pasquée and Via Cantonetto

The drinking-water office has announced the completion of paving left after replacement of the public main and several private connections on Via in Pasquée. The work affects its junction with Via Cantonetto and, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting, is scheduled for Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 September.

The most sensitive period is 08:00 to 17:00, particularly during paving. The municipality says it will try to retain vehicle access to homes where possible, but asks people using private parking in the area, or approaching from Via Cantonetto, to use municipal parking nearby. Until the work is actually complete, blue-zone spaces can also be used without a parking disc. On-site signs and site staff take precedence, so check before arranging a delivery or visit.

A second notice for Montagnola. Via dei Camuzzi will be closed from Tuesday 8 at 07:00 to Wednesday 9 at 18:00 for the erection of a construction crane. The brief municipal notice gives no diversion: anyone travelling that way should check before leaving.

Barca: the variant is approved, but the process is not entirely closed

The Council of State has approved the variant to the land-use plans for the Montagnola and Gentilino sections, and to the detailed plan for the Barca nucleus, concerning the designation of a service road and a car lift. The municipal notice reproduces the cantonal decision of 19 August.

“Approved” does not mean that a building site is imminent. The decision provides for publication in the Official Gazette and on the municipal noticeboard, and states that an appeal to the Cantonal Administrative Court can be made within 30 days of notification; the municipality has standing to appeal. Anyone following this planning process should read the decision itself rather than infer dates from the headline.

Saturday: music at Villa Gilardi and a late-opening Museum

On Saturday 5 September, from 20:00 to 23:00, the park at Villa Gilardi and the Hermann Hesse Museum host Giardini musicali and the Museum’s Notte bianca. The Orchestra Giovanile della Svizzera italiana, conducted by Yuram Ruiz, will perform Bizet, Saint-Saëns and Mozart’s Symphony No. 25. The park opens exceptionally to the public; after the concert, the museum remains open by candlelight, with small ensembles and refreshments in the square.

Entry is free and the organisers recommend registering. Neither a ticket nor a wet-weather alternative has been announced, so check the Museum page and the Vivi Collina d’Oro calendar before setting off. It is only steps from Casa Camuzzi, but with a rare change of pace: the private garden and museum keep the same late hours.

Sunday in Agra: a walk, macaroni and Hesse

The Picon Society’s Festa d’Agra takes place on Sunday 6 September at the Area Svago Bigogno. The 10-kilometre walk begins at 09:00, the 5-kilometre route at 10:30, and free macaroni is served from 12:00. The programme lists music and activities into the evening. The condition is clear: the event will take place only in good weather, with updates on the organiser’s WhatsApp channel.

At 16:00, the Hermann Hesse Museum resumes its bilingual Sunday readings: Morgan Powell and Lucilla Janssen will read Kamala o l’arte dell’amore, from Siddhartha, in Italian and German. The two plans do not clash: anyone leaving Bigogno has time to return to Montagnola, but on a warm day and with an event depending on good weather, it is best not to leave it to the last minute.

Water and the calendar: two reminders

Drought level 1 remains the practical rule to keep in mind. In Gentilino, Montagnola—excluding Pian Scairolo—and Carabietta, private users may not wash vehicles, yards, terraces or roofs with drinking water, nor fill swimming pools. The municipality has not published a revocation or a more stringent level since 19 August. Still, the lack of news is not a promise: for water use, the current municipal guidance always applies.

The next service date is already Wednesday 9 September: from 15:00, the municipality and the cantonal waste-management authority will hold a meeting on waste management in the assembly hall of the school. It falls just outside this newsletter’s most active period, but is worth noting for anyone with questions about collection, disposal or daily habits.
