A Friday diversion, then school returns on Monday

Via al Molino/Via Grancia closes on 28 August; Gentilino celebrates and school starts Monday.

Sant’Abbondio in Gentilino

Good Thursday from the Hill.

This is one of those weeks when the diary calls for accuracy above all else. Traffic changes at the Via al Molino/Via Grancia junction on Friday morning; meanwhile summer is not quite over between Montagnola and Gentilino. The bar hut at l’Ovale opens on Thursday and Friday for the final evenings of the season, Bora da Besa hosts the Festa di fine estate, and the Hermann Hesse Museum has a reading on Hesse’s Ticino on Sunday. On Monday, classes resume across Ticino.

The forecast does not treat the next three days equally. Thursday should be mostly dry, Friday is the most uncertain and potentially wet day, while Saturday looks more favourable. If you are planning a drive, an outdoor meal or a family event, the useful information is not a blanket promise of sunshine but when the forecast actually changes.

Weather: keep an eye on Friday, a clearer weekend ahead

This table uses MeteoSwiss’s official local forecast for 6926 Montagnola, 473 m, consulted on 26 August at 18:42 CEST (16:00 UTC model run). It gives the central precipitation estimate and, where useful, the 10th–90th percentile range.

Day Low / high Outlook Precipitation
Thursday 27 20 / 27 °C Changeable, largely dry 0 mm (0–0.7 mm)
Friday 28 20 / 24 °C Unsettled, rain likely 8.9 mm (1.1–24.6 mm)
Saturday 29 18 / 26 °C Mostly sunny 0 mm (0–1.5 mm)
Sunday 30 18 / 26 °C Mostly sunny 0 mm (0–0.3 mm)
Monday 31 19 / 26 °C Fairly sunny 0 mm (0–4.9 mm)
Tuesday 1 17 / 25 °C Changeable, showers possible 2 mm (0–15.4 mm)
Wednesday 2 16 / 25 °C Changeable and still uncertain 0.5 mm (0–13.6 mm)

For warnings, refer to the official MeteoSwiss hazard map. For the Festa di fine estate, the practical consequence is straightforward: Friday should not yet be treated as a dry evening. Saturday is currently the more reliable window for being outdoors.

Friday 28: Via al Molino and Via Grancia closed from 7:30 to 17:30

The Municipality has announced that Friday 28 August, from 7:30 to 17:30, the junction of Via al Molino and Via Grancia will be closed to vehicles for utility works and cable installation. Anyone using the area for work, deliveries, school runs or access to businesses in Pian Scairolo should allow extra time and plan an alternative route.

The A2 Gentilino–Lamone works remain under way. USTRA’s 2026 notice describes two lanes in each direction and an 80 km/h limit along the section. This is useful context, but it is not a closure announced for the weekend.

The municipal noticeboard has also published the cantonal approval of a planning variation for the service road and car lift at Barca, in the Montagnola and Gentilino sections. It is a planning matter, not a worksite changing today’s daily traffic.

Water: level 1 restrictions still apply in three sections

The Municipality has introduced drought level 1 in Gentilino and Montagnola, excluding Pian Scairolo; since 19 August it also applies in Carabietta. Agra and Grancia are not included in these notices. The measures took effect immediately and remain in force until the Municipality announces a change.

The sensible rule is still to use drinking water sparingly and consult the municipal guidance before outdoor work, filling or washing. For a leak or an urgent water-network issue, the drinking-water office lists 091 986 46 86, including an out-of-hours duty service.

From Friday to Sunday: the local diary catches its breath

The final two gatherings at l’Ovale

On Thursday 27 and Friday 28 from 17:00, the bar hut opens at Piazza Brocchi. Thursday still includes the market of local products. The E…state all’Ovale programme ends on Sunday 30 August, making these its final two regular openings.

Festa di fine estate at Bora da Besa

From Friday 28 August at 18:00 to Saturday 29 August at 23:30, Collina in Festa presents its Festa di fine estate in the Bora da Besa recreation area, at Gentilino’s playground. On Friday, the bar opens at 18:00, a pasta supper is offered to residents at 19:00, tombola starts at 20:00 and music follows. On Saturday, the bar opens at 18:00, the grill starts at 19:00 and djdiego83 takes over from 20:00. Both evenings end at 23:30.

In bad weather, the event will be cancelled rather than postponed. Before setting out on Friday, check Collina in Festa’s channel or the Vivi Collina d’Oro calendar.

Sunday at the Hesse Museum

At 16:00 on Sunday 30 August, the Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola continues its bilingual reading series. The chosen text is On hot days I wandered through the villages and chestnut woods. Summer in my second home, Ticino. Manuela Cattaneo reads in Italian and Marianne Niculescu in German. Practical information is available directly from the museum.

Monday 31: school returns

The Department of Education, Culture and Sport sets the start of classes for Monday 31 August 2026 across Ticino, with exceptions for some vocational pathways. In Collina d’Oro, the municipal school directorate notes that the pre-school service follows the school calendar and operates from the first day, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Montagnola school institute.

For families planning the first journey, the Municipality has published the 2026–27 transport timetables. Kindergarten transport covers Agra and Pian Scairolo; primary-school routes include Agra and Bigogno, Arasio, Gentilino, Pianroncate, Scairolo and Viglio. After-school services and lunch provision require admission and enrolment; the municipal site sets out priorities and conditions for families in Pian Scairolo and the lake area.

From Tuesday, Cyclomania across the Municipality

Tuesday 1 September marks the start of Cyclomania 2026, the cycling challenge the Municipality describes as the first initiative of its kind in Ticino. It runs until 30 September and covers the whole Municipality: it is not an event in a single square, but an invitation to record bicycle journeys and take part in the challenge. Operational details, the official link and the flyer are available on the municipal page.

Agra already has a later date to note: the Festa d’Agra with a walk in the Hill is set for Sunday 6 September at the Area Svago Bigogno, from 9:00 to 22:00.

If you spot a timetable change, a diversion on the ground or a local story worth two lines, write to us. In a local newsletter, the right detail matters more than one extra adjective.

See you next Thursday.
