The week on the Collina: a 30 km/h zone to read, Hesse at Sant’Abbondio

Summer at Piazza Brocchi has not ended with 1 August. E…state all’Ovale is confirmed until Sunday 30 August, with gatherings every Thursday and Friday from 5 pm. Alongside that running programme, this week brings two pieces of news worth reading at a slower pace: a traffic proposal for the heart of Montagnola and an event that takes Hermann Hesse back to Sant’Abbondio, where he is buried.

The week also unfolds beyond the postcard view: along the cantonal road, bus stops and parking spaces in Montagnola; through Gentilino and Viglio; and on journeys towards Pian Scairolo, Piodella and Carabietta. Residents who have an observation on the proposed 30 km/h zone still have time to consult the documents. Anyone passing through Sant’Abbondio on Sunday can spend an hour with a bilingual reading, in Italian and German, with no booking required.

Weather: hot through Friday, then unsettled

The forecast below is from the official MeteoSwiss page for Montagnola 6926, at 473 metres, recorded in the image supplied to the newsroom on 5 August at 6.14 pm. Thursday and Friday remain hot, and the display shows a red heat-warning symbol. From Sunday, showers or thunderstorms are possible.

In Montagnola, the 30 km/h zone is on public display

The Municipality has published a road project to introduce a maximum speed of 30 km/h on the cantonal Via Collina d’Oro, in the historic centre of Montagnola. This is not yet a change that has come into force. The official notice states that the project is on public display from 24 July to 24 August 2026, following municipal approval of the project and its spending credit.

The stated stretch is the S213 cantonal road, from PR 20+535 to PR 20+754. For people who live or pass through the area, the immediate consequence is straightforward: the documents can be read, but there is no new road signage in place yet. The technical report, sign plan and traffic-monitoring material can be consulted at the Technical Office secretariat, Via Chioso 1 in Gentilino, Monday to Friday from 10.30 am to noon.

Anyone with a legitimate interest can file a written objection, in duplicate, by the end of the public-display period. It is a formal step but not a marginal one: the right to object concerns possible conflicts with applicable law and does not reopen matters already decided in the local land-use plan. The notice does not announce a finished choice; it opens a defined window to read the plans and, where appropriate, to take a position.

Sunday at Sant’Abbondio: Hesse tells the story of Francis

On Sunday 9 August, at 5 pm, the church of Sant’Abbondio in Gentilino hosts The Singer of Simplicity – Hesse tells the story of Francis of Assisi. The gathering marks the 64th anniversary of Hermann Hesse’s death and turns to a less familiar text than a standard anthology: the biography Hesse devoted to Francis of Assisi in 1904, after travelling in Umbria.

The setting matters. Hesse is buried in the cemetery at Gentilino, and Sant’Abbondio is not an interchangeable backdrop: the event links the writer’s thought to a precise point on the Collina. Antonio Ballerio reads in Italian and Ernst Süss in German. Admission is free, with a contribution according to the “pay what you want” principle; the church is listed as accessible.

For those who do not usually visit the museum, it is an uncomplicated way into Hesse without the feeling of attending a lecture. For readers who already know him, the choice of Francis brings forward a question that belongs closely to Hesse: what remains of inner freedom when someone tries to live with less noise and fewer possessions?

An exhibition that continues between events

The Hermann Hesse Museum in Montagnola is open daily through October, from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm. The temporary exhibition Isa Hesse-Rabinovitch! continues until 1 November. It is dedicated to the multi-talented artist and daughter-in-law of Hermann Hesse, and offers a further reason to return to Torre Camuzzi without waiting for a special evening.

For anyone with visitors in the area or a free morning, the museum offers a short but substantial local route. Montagnola, Casa Camuzzi and Sant’Abbondio are close together, yet they belong to different corners of the Collina and carry a story that does not live only in quotations on plaques.

The ATTE Garden starts on 17 August

The Municipality announces the start, on Monday 17 August, of the ATTE Garden in collaboration with Pro Senectute. The idea is simple: an outdoor place for a coffee, a newspaper, a conversation and time spent together. In August, when many association calendars slow down, this kind of regular, uncomplicated meeting can be a service in itself: a place to pause, meet someone and keep a small neighbourhood habit alive.

Late August and September: two dates for the diary

For the last weekend of August, Collina in Festa announces its End-of-Summer Festival at the playground in Gentilino, on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 August. On Friday the refreshment stand opens at 6 pm, followed by free macaroni for the community at 7 pm, tombola at 8 pm and music until 11.30 pm. On Saturday the stand opens at 6 pm, the grill starts at 7 pm and a DJ set begins at 8 pm, again until 11.30 pm. In bad weather, the festival will be cancelled.

In Agra, the Società del Picon has published its 2026 programme and has already marked the Festa di Agra for Sunday 6 September at the sports field in Bigogno d’Agra. Its Autunno in Campo follows on Friday 16 October at the same venue. The Picon is now a regular local source for this newsletter: associations often record the everyday life of the Collina before it reaches wider calendars.

Drought and water: practical care, without inventing bans

The cantonal picture calls for a clear note. On 17 July, the Council of State referred to a drought-alert situation caused by low rainfall and said that water stored in Ticino’s hydroelectric reservoirs was at the lower end of the values recorded over the previous ten years. On 24 July, the Agricultural Section confirmed that persistent drought is putting pressure on lowland and mountain farms. The Canton and Civil Protection have activated measures to coordinate supplies and, where authorised, extraordinary withdrawals for agricultural irrigation.

This does not amount to a general ban on household water use in Collina d’Oro. The local water regulation provides that, in the event of scarcity, the Municipality may limit or suspend supply to swimming pools, allotments and gardens, industrial and agricultural uses, and only as a last resort domestic use. The practical response is simple: postpone filling swimming pools, avoid waste and irrigation in the hottest hours, use what is needed, and follow municipal information.

Noticeboard and services

The online noticeboard, checked on 5 August, lists among its most recent publications a public-transport announcement dated 3 August, a building notice in Gentilino dated 30 July, and the mobility and municipal-initiative notices already reported here. Building notices are not promises of construction work: they indicate an ongoing procedure. That is why this newsletter does not turn a private application into a development story.

The summer judicial recess remains a useful practical reminder. Until 15 August, deadlines in administrative proceedings follow specific rules. Anyone following a document concerning their property, a road or a nearby development should start with the date on the document, the authority named on it and the official text.
